Response to the Budget Updates for Napa County
Napa Valley Taxpayers Alliance
We appreciate the excellent job that the
County has been doing with conservative financial management, and also thank Brett Ferguson for his excellent and well informed presentations on the budget. However, we also do feel that we are about to enter some rough financial waters and want to express our input on some key budget issues.
The state budget is in deep trouble beyond the current deficits and beyond the current economic downturn. This has been building for years now, and the news continues to get worse on virtually a daily basis. It seems apparent that not only the State of California but Napa is going to go through a profound and long lasting change induced by what is emerging as a new economic reality. Revenues to the government are going to go down markedly, and we need to begin planning our response now. This new level of economic hardship is going to require a restructuring of the way that California and Napa run our government in relation to our economy, and the sooner we recognize that the sooner we can adjust to that new reality.
